Terms of service

Plain language, because you are agreeing to it at signup with one checkbox. Two things below are the ones that cost money, so they get their own callouts.

Readiness and access

Have your buckets lidded and staged in the location on file when the earth steward arrives on your service day. If they are not out, the lids are off, or the earth steward cannot get in, we charge a $75.00 surcharge for that day.

The first incident is always waived. Every incident is recorded with a photo and the earth steward’s arrival and departure timestamps, and you can see all of it in your account.

If a payment fails

Here is the whole sequence, in order:

  1. Two business days before your pickup, your card runs.
  2. One business day before, if it declined, an automatic retry runs.
  3. If the retry declines, we call you. There is a full business day left before the truck comes.
  4. We still come the first time. The earth steward services your stop normally while we work the problem with you. Every account gets exactly one of these.
  5. If it is still unresolved after that pickup, service ends. At the next stop the earth steward collects every bucket and leaves none, and your deposit is refunded less anything owed.
The rest of it

Service

We collect organic waste from your business on a fixed route day and haul it to a community compost site in South Brooklyn, operated by Earth Stewards NYC. You keep lidded 5-gallon buckets with compostable liners. On your service day the earth steward weighs each full bucket, takes it, and leaves the same number of clean ones.

What you are charged

You are charged per pickup. There is no subscription, no monthly billing, and no monthly minimum. Each charge covers your scheduled bucket count at the rates on the pricing page.

Anything discovered at the stop is not billed back to that pickup. Extra buckets beyond your scheduled count and any readiness surcharge are added to your next charge, with the photo and timestamps from the stop they came from.

Buckets and deposits

A refundable deposit of $10.00 per bucket is collected at signup. That deposit is the only charge at signup. It is refunded in full after your final pickup, less anything owed. A bucket that is not returned is billed at $10.00.

Changing or skipping a pickup

You can skip a pickup or change your bucket count until 5pm the day before. Because your card usually ran two business days out, a skip after the charge is credited to your next pickup rather than refunded. A skip before the charge runs means nothing is charged at all. Your ledger shows which one applied.

Contamination

Non-organic material in a bucket contaminates the whole load. The first two times we photograph it, collect it anyway, and email you what we found. Persistent contamination ends service.

Cadence limits

Monthly collection is only available at 4 buckets or fewer, because four weeks of food scraps in a bucket is a pest and odor problem.
