Your event’s food scraps, composted in the city.
We deliver bins, collect and weigh the scraps, and haul them to our community compost site. You get a report that notes how many pounds you diverted from landfills and how much compost you created as a result. It is now easier than ever for street fairs, galas, conferences, weddings, farmers markets, and catering halls to divert organic waste back into soil.
How an event runs
What actually happens, in the order it happens.
Date, address, expected attendance, indoor or out, how many food vendors, whether you want stations staffed. Two minutes.
- Tell us
Date, address, expected attendance, indoor or out, how many food vendors, whether you want stations staffed. Two minutes.
- We quote it
One number, all in, with tax shown. We collect a 50% deposit to hold the date and charge the balance on the day of the event.
- Bins arrive
Lidded buckets and bins where the food is, with signs above each one saying what goes in. We coordinate with your venue or your street permit contact.
- Your event
If you have taken staffed stations, our earth stewards are at the bins during service hours, keeping plastic out and answering questions from guests.
- Collect and weigh
Every bin goes on a hanging scale at load-out. Nothing on your report is an estimate.
- You get the report
Pounds diverted, and the compost it made. Yours to send to your sponsor, your client, your board, or your social media.
And round again: the compost goes back into the ground that grows the food.
The soil creates the food. The food enriches the soil.
- Lidded buckets and bins, delivered before load-in and taken at load-out.
- Signage for every bin, printed, saying what goes in and what does not.
- Weighing at load-out, every container on a scale.
- Hauling to our community compost site. Nothing landfilled, nothing incinerated, nothing trucked out of the city.
- A post-event report with the weights.
- Optional: staffed sort stations, our earth stewards at the bins during service.
- Optional: a sign at the compost site or garden where your compost ends up, naming your event as a contributor.
Three parts, and your quote shows each one.
- Delivery and retrieval. A flat fee for taking the van off route to your date and address.
- $25.00 per bucket collected. The same rate our route customers pay. A bucket holds about 25 lbs.
- Staffed stations, per steward per hour. Optional.
New York sales tax at 8.875% is added, and your quote shows it. A 50% deposit holds the date; the balance is charged on the day.
Guests sort badly. That is the whole problem.
Back of house is easy. The front of house is where events fail.
Back of house is easy, because the people scraping plates do it every shift. The front of house is where events fail: a guest holding a cup, a plate and a napkin makes one guess, and one plastic fork means the batch cannot go to a garden.
Two things fix it, and we recommend both for any public-facing event.
BPI or CMA certified, and it has to say so on the item. “Eco” and “plant-based” with no certification usually means a plastic lining. We will send you a one-page sheet to pass to your caterers and vendors when you book.
An attended station sorts clean. An unattended one does not, and at a 500-person event the difference decides whether the material is usable at all.
Event FAQ
The questions organizers ask before they book.
Catering establishments hosting events over 100 attendees, and temporary public events over 500 attendees, are covered by New York City’s commercial organics rules. Rules change and enforcement is the city’s, not ours. We can tell you what the rule says and what we would collect. We do not certify anyone’s compliance, and nothing in our report claims to.
Three weeks for anything with staffed stations, two weeks for bins only. Ask us anyway if your date is sooner; we will tell you straight away whether we can make it work.
Cancel before your buckets are dropped and there is no charge. After that the delivery and retrieval fee stands and the bucket charges are waived.
Ask us. Events are off route anyway, so the geography is more flexible than our weekly service.
No. We take food scraps and the paper that touched food. Your venue or your permit carter handles the rest.
Please do. We will give you the sign copy, and once the batch is finished we will post your event on our compost page with the pounds.
